Enfield Town’s pre-season fixture preparations for Saturday’s first Isthmian League Premier Division game of the new campaign at Lewes ended with a 1-0 defeat to Royston Town.

An even contest was decided by Brandon Adams’ 60th-minute goal which gave the visitors the result their second-half display deserved.

Town made a bright start to the game and almost took the lead after nine minutes when Sam Bantick hit the post from outside the area. However, opportunities for the hosts were thin on the ground thereafter.

Royston were to enjoy a greater share of possession after the break and former Enfield player Brandon Adams had already been thwarted by Nathan McDonald before the decisive goal arrived.

One of a number of trialists for Enfield caused the visitors some problems in the closing stages but they were unable to find an equaliser.

The outcome had been more encouraging last Wednesday when Enfield beat a Tottenham Hotspur development side 2-0.

The Spurs youngsters were skilful throughout, but they lacked a cutting edge up front and come off second best physically to a Town side who could take great heart from their performance.

The opening goal came after 12 minutes when Billy Bricknell fired low and hard across goal following a throw.

Clear daylight was established 12 minutes later after Sam Hatton fed the ball out wide to fellow full-back Joe Payne, who smashed a superb volley past Brandon Austin.
