The signs are looking increasingly promising for Enfield Town after they thumped Corinthian Casuals 6-1 to sit within three points of the Bostik Premier Division summit.

The victory, the Towners’ second by that score line in the space of five weeks on their travels, leaves Andy Leese’s men second in the table behind Tonbridge Angels with a division-high 23 goals to their name after eight matches.

Wearing the yellow and red kit that had seen the visitors beat Burgess Hill by the same margin, the visitors were soon starting to ask defensive questions of Casuals.

With Bilal Sayoud and Aaron Greene providing the width, the first clear chance came when Mickey Parcell and Sayoud exchanged passes and Sam Youngs sent over a good cross for Billy Bricknell to head just over.

Youngs was to have two efforts on goal after being set up by Ryan Blackman, seeing the first blocked before the follow-up was deflected narrowly wide.

The home side did look lively on the break but Joe Wright was to have a relatively quiet time between the posts in the first half.

At the other end Youngs tested Casuals keeper Brad Comins with a low drive and a Sayoud cross into the six-yard box evaded everyone, before the deadlock was broken after 25 minutes in fine fashion when Sayoud flicked the ball over Jack Strange and struck a left-foot finish into the top corner.

Enfield pressed for a second and after Dan Rumens had sent a header narrowly over, his presence in the six-yard box led to the visitors doubling their lead on the stroke of half-time following a corner, with the last touch probably coming off the home side’s Reece Hannigan.

The visitors continued on the front foot after the break with Blackman denied by the on-rushing Comins, but the hosts keeper was to be beaten for a third time by Bricknell from a Youngs cross.

The home side did gain some reward for their efforts when Gabril Odunaike slid his finish past Wright after Sayoud had been dispossessed. The Towners’ response to conceding that goal was emphatic.

Youngs cut inside from the right to steer a fine finish past Comins to make it 4-1 in the 67th minute. Three minutes later, Enfield had scored their fifth when Bricknell fired home from the penalty spot after Youngs had been brought down by Mu Maan.

There was plenty of time remaining for the visitors to add to their tally, but they ultimately had to settle for one more goal, netted by substitute Sam Chaney in the 73rd minute after being set up by Parcell.

Town will aim to extend their strong start to the season when they entertain 12th-placed Merstham at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium in a 3pm kick-off.
