There was disappointment for Enfield Borough on Saturday as they suffered a first league defeat since the opening day of the season when they lost 2-1 at Broadfields United.

Despite Borough’s excellent form in Spartan South Midlands League Division One, this was always going to be a difficult fixture against another team who had started the campaign well and did the double over Borough last season.

Enfield had to do without Greg Moorse, who had scored eight times in his previous three league games. While his replacement Alie Bangura had seven goals to his name this season prior to the weekend, the absence of Moorse deprived the team of a greater physical presence in the forward line.

After a cagey opening, Sivi Bao almost gave Enfield the lead when his long-range effort grazed the foot of the post. But the visitors did make the breakthrough after 28 minutes when Jamiah Lawrence-Plentie’s corner was played back to Brandon McKenna on the edge of the area and his right-foot shot went through a sea of bodies and into the net.

However, Broadfields were to level five minutes before the break when Jonti Purdom mis-directed a drop kick, the ball was returned towards the Enfield goal, Brian Tshibangu headed into the air and it dropped nicely for Rex Kimona to fire inside the near post.

This inspired the hosts and they were to have the majority of the chances after the break before scoring the winner with 20 minutes remaining.

Once again a Purdom kick failed to reach its intended target and the ball was returned upfield to Dene Gardiner who timed his run to perfection and rounded the Borough keeper to slot home.

The defeat means Borough drop to second in Division One, a point behind FC Broxbourne Borough, but attention switches to the FA Vase on Sunday when Sporting Bengal United visit the Maurice Rebak Stadium for a 3pm kick-off.
