Enfield Town continued their unbeaten start in the Bostik League Premier Division but were forced to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Dorking Wanderers on Saturday.

The Towners would have expected a tight affair with their Surrey visitors tasting defeat on just one occasion in the league heading into their clash at the QEII Stadium.

Following a four-point haul over the Bank Holiday weekend it was little surprise to see Andy Leese’s Enfield side dominate the opening exchanges.

Town midfielder Sam Youngs would have their first effort on goal within 60 seconds, although Dorking goalkeeper Slavomir Huk was more than a match to it on this occasion.

The opener did arrive, however, with 17 minutes played as good work by Remi Sutton out wide got the reward it deserved when full-back Sam Hatton collected a loose ball in the box and fired home.

It was the 30-year-old former AFC Wimbledon and Grimsby Town player’s first goal in Enfield colours as the hosts capitalised on their encouraging start to good effect to take a 1-0 lead.

In truth, Town should have been home and dry by half-time and the fact they were not would doubtlessly have been the biggest source of frustration for all those of an Enfield persuasion.

First Huk had to be alert to deny a powerful effort from Sam Chaney, before Lewis Taaffe inexplicably fired wide from close range after another Chaney effort had been parried.

Having created very little in the first half, it always looked likely that Dorking would improve in the second period – and so it proved.

But not before Enfield picked up where they left off after a dominant first half as Taaffe volleyed wide of the mark and Youngs found the net only for it to be ruled out for an earlier foul.

Wanderers finally got into their stride and grabbed an equaliser from nothing just after the hour mark.

Matthew Briggs breached the Enfield back-line’s offside trap and dinked an effort up and over Enfield goalkeeper Joe Wright to level proceedings at 1-1 after 66 minutes.

That setback had stunned the Towners as Dorking continued to grow in confidence, and had their hosts who not too long before had been in the ascendancy firmly on the back foot.

When Jason Prior collected the ball and fired well over the bar, Enfield might have remained unscathed but they were sent a firm warning that this contest was very much still in the balance.

The visitors finished strongly and looked most likely to snatch a winner as both Tom Richards and the aforementioned Prior threatened a second goal of the game.

Buoyed by those two misses Enfield made a last ditch attempt of their own to claim a fourth win of the season, as Ryan Blackman and Sutton went close, but the scores remained level at 1-1.

The Towners now enter FA Cup action with a tie at home to Bedford Town in the First Qualifying Round on Saturday.
