Enfield Town made it a more than satisfactory Bank Holiday weekend as they collected four points from a possible six to stay unbeaten in second place in the Bostik League Premier Division.

The Towners fought back to draw 1-1 at Wingate & Finchley on Monday – just 48 hours removed from a 6-1 demolition job of Burgess Hill Town.

They found the going tougher at the Maurice Rebak Stadium, however, and despite Marc Weatherstone crashing an effort into the woodwork, they had very little to show for their efforts in a frustrating opening half of attritional football.

Indeed, it was the hosts who took the lead after 23 minutes as Tommy Tejan-Sie won the ball and played in striker Marc Charles-Smith, who neatly applied the finishing touch beyond Joe Wright.

Andy Leese’s Town did muster one final effort of a disappointing opening 45 minutes as Shane Gore saved well from Sam Youngs following earlier good work by Aaron Greene.

The introduction of Lewis Taaffe into the action from the bench seemed to spark Enfield into life as the visitors began to carry a greater attacking threat.

Wingate’s plan was clearly to sting Enfield on the break, however, and they nearly succeeded as Reece Beckles-Richards was smartly denied by Wright, before Gore saved twice from Taaffe and Youngs to preserve the lead.

The Blues goalkeeper was powerless to prevent the leveller arriving with 18 minutes remaining, though, as Greene tucked home a cross to the far post to deservedly draw the Towners level.

And that was how it stayed as both sides had to make do with a point apiece, while Enfield now get set for Saturday’s visit of Dorking Wanderers to the QEII Stadium.

Last weekend proved to be more fruitful as Town racked up an impressive 6-1 win at Burgess Hill Town, who remain winless.

It took Leese’s men just 15 minutes to open their account as Greene’s cross found scorer Liam Hope via Bilal Sayoud for the opener.

The visitors continued to create chances and were unfortunate not to double their lead sooner, but Taofiq Olomowewe did in the 28th minute after being presented with the simplest of tasks from close range.

Now the bit was firmly between Enfield’s teeth as Hope turned provider for Youngs to add goal number three from a delicate chip just six minutes later.

The momentum did not dissipate in the second half either as Matt Johnson buried the rebound after Sayoud had fired an effort against the post.

It was 5-1 soon after when Sayoud teed up Youngs, before Ryan Blackman completed the scoring with a sixth of an impressive afternoon for the Towners.

Enfield have also learned their FA Cup fate following the draw for the First Qualifying Round earlier today.

Town will play host to Southern League Division One Central outfit Bedford Town, a side who play one level below Enfield on the non-league pyramid.

The match will be played at the QEII Stadium on Saturday, September 8, with £6,000 in prize money on offer for the victors.
