Enfield Town more than held their own against a Tottenham Hotspur XI at Queen Elizabeth II Stadium on Monday night, despite narrowly ending up on the losing side in a 2-1 defeat.
Fresh from contesting the Cheshunt Community Cup on Saturday, it was straight back into the swing of things as the Towners continue to edge closer to the start of the new Bostik Premier Division season.
Ultimately two penalties from star man Marcus Edwards proved sufficient enough for a strong Spurs Development side to triumph; a late Brandon Adams marker proving to be mere consolation for the home side.
In front of a crowd of 732, Tottenham snatched the lead after 20 minutes when Edwards coolly converted the first of his two spot kicks.
That was the way it remained at the break despite Enfield showing they were more than capable of living with a side possessing excellent technical ability and organisation.
However, any hopes that Town had of forcing a result suffered a further setback when Edwards won and scored his second penalty of the evening just shy of the hour mark.
To their credit, however, the hosts continued to probe and got their reward when Adams finished superbly to round off a smart move involving Sam Youngs and Liam Hope to halve the deficit with 10 minutes remaining.
No further goals arrived though, despite both sides having their chances late on, as Spurs notched up a slender 2-1 victory.
