Enfield Town continued their pre-season preparations with two 60 minute matches in a three-team Royal British Legion fundraiser round-robin tournament held at Cheshunt’s Theobalds Lane on Saturday.

Alongside the hosts, the Towners would also take on newly promoted league rivals AFC Hornchurch in the Cheshunt Community Cup – a pre-season tournament which was eventually won by Cheshunt.

First up for Andy Leese’s side was the challenge of Hornchurch with Enfield including Billy Bricknell and Lewis Taaffe who both missed their 3-0 win against Wembley last time out, while Sam Chaney also made his debut in midfield.

Things got off to the worst possible start, however, as Town fell behind within the opening two minutes of the match.

After good work down the right hand side, a cross was turned home by Hornchurch’s Sean Marks from close range to hand the Urchins, who were beaten 2-0 by Cheshunt in game one, the early advantage.

Enfield’s response was as emphatic as it was immediate drawing level just 10 minutes later. A left-wing cross from Remi Sutton was controlled and finished well by one of several triallists on show.

Despite a good spell of possession on a rock-hard surface, neither side could add to their tally before the interval.

However Enfield would be undone by a moment of second-half magic courtesy of Dexter Peter who volleyed Jamie Hursit’s free-kick home – a goal that would prove to be the winner.

In the second match, Leese made wholesale changes to his side as a combination of absences, a second game back-to-back, and the opportunity to get an extended look at fringe players and triallists encouraged the Town boss to rotate his squad.

A plethora of triallists lined up alongside some more experienced individuals including Mat Mitchel-King, Junior Mubiayi and Jack Hockney, while Rian McLean had his first outing for the club.

Unlike the Hornchurch game, Enfield were quick to establish themselves against the hosts and grabbed the lead after 15 minutes.

Good work from Hockney proved decisive as he fed one of several triallists in the Town ranks for the opener.

The match remained that way for the rest of of the first half until 10 minutes into the second period when Cheshunt levelled proceedings thanks to a bullet header from Haffez Sanusi.

As the match ended in a draw, a point, combined with their victory over Hornchurch, proved sufficient for Cheshunt to claim the trophy.
