Mid-table Enfield Town will look to bring the curtain down on their season on a winning note after their final home game of the campaign ended in defeat on Saturday.

Andy Leese’s men make the trip a Merstham side directly below them in the Bostik Premier table this weekend, having been edged out by a single Worthing goal last time out.

There was no shortage of effort on display in Town’s last outing of the season at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium but little end product, with one clinical finish ultimately proving the difference between the sides.

Enfield had chances to take an early lead, with Brad Wadkins and Dan Rumens both missing a Mickey Parcell free-kick at the far post, before Worthing keeper Lucas Covolan thwarted Ryan Blake after a fine run from halfway and then bravely smothered Sam Youngs’ follow-up effort.

What proved to be the winning goal was scored soon after when Zack Newton flicked the ball past Samir Bihmoutine, rounded the exposed Joe Wright and kept his calm to score.

After Aaron Greene had blazed over the target for the home side, Worthing finished the opening period by hitting the woodwork, but Covolan was then called upon to make a good one-handed save to keep out a Youngs deflected effort.

Wright needed to be at his best to prevent the visitors from scoring a second goal after the restart, including a wonderful reaction stop to keep out Kieron Pamment’s point-blank header.

Enfield kept pushing for the equaliser though, with Blake close to getting his head on the end of a Youngs corner at the far post in the 77th minute.

Covolan then dealt relatively comfortably with Wadkins’ header from a Ryan Blackman free-kick, before substitute Dernell Wynter toe-poked a shot narrowly wide after working space for a shot.

But it was Wright who was to make the final save of note as Worthing claimed the three points.

The goalkeeper’s good weekend continued when he was named both Players’ Player and Supporters’ Player of the Season in the club’s annual awards.

Leese selected Blackman as the Manager’s Player of the Season, Youngs took the Jets Player of the Season accolade and Junior Mubiayi was named Young Player of the campaign.

Simon Thomas won the club’s leading goalscorer gong and Blackman’s strike at home to Dulwich Hamlet was selected as the Goal of the Season.

Parcell picked up an award in recognition of reaching 100 Town appearances, Eric Allan was chosen as Club Person of the Year and Neil Butterfield won the Unsung Hero Award.

Although the Towners have played their final league of the season, their ground will host a charity match on Sunday in aid of Enfield Carers Centre.

As well as the first-team squad, the match will feature a number of former professionals - including Junior Lewis, Darren Currie, Barry Hayles and Town assistant boss Darren Purse - and some Enfield players from the past.

The match kicks off at 1pm and the turnstiles will be open from midday, with the fixture a ‘pay what you can’ event.
