AN eBay shark found out that he had bitten off more than he could chew after being ordered to pay up to £3,000 in fines and costs by Enfield magistrates this month.

Robert Boyd, of Treves Close, Winchmore Hill, pleaded guilty at Enfield magistrates court to selling counterfeit DVDs on the auction site after he was caught by Enfield Council's Trading Standards team.

Working on a tip-off, officers discovered Boyd was selling 52 copies of Shark Tale and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on the auction site, although he knew they were fake.

Magistrates later heard how Boyd was selling nearly 3,000 other items on eBay.

Councillor Terry Neville, cabinet member for environment, said: "There are some real sharks out there preying on residents' understandable wish to buy a bargain.

"Although the council's excellent Trading Standards team does a fantastic job in tracking down rogue traders and bringing them to book, I do urge consumers to be wary when buying goods on auction sites to ensure they are getting the real deal."
