An Enfield chippy holds the Guinness World Record for the largest portion of fish and chips.

Fish and Chips @ in London Road battered a massive meal in July which weighed 47.75kg, battering the previous record holders by almost 2kg.

Guinness have spent the past two months adjudicating the record and revealed last week that Enfield is the worthy winner.

Chippy owner John Phantis said: "It is no different, I knew we had beaten it, it was just about getting the rubber stamp from Guinness but it is nice we got it."

He had not realised how much the record attempt would cost - with the colossal halibut costing £1,050.

It also cost an extra £600 to £700 to employ engineers to install and remove specialist fryers to cook the huge fish.

However, former record holder David Moss, who manages The Wensleydale Heifer pub in the Yorkshire Dales, is not ready to admit defeat.

He is already in talks with fishmongers to source a fish which will blow Enfield’s record out of the water.

He said: “We want to make it as hard as it can because at the moment, it is still breakable.

“If we had followed the guidelines better by cooking more chips it wouldn’t have broken. We thought the weight of chips had to equal the fish, but actually the fish had to be half the weight.”

The record may have already been broken by a chip shop in Poole in Dorset, but this is yet to be confirmed.

Mr Moss said everyone wants to be in the Guinness World Record book, and if the record is stolen from Enfield imminently, the borough may not feature.
