A new free primary school will be built on land leased from a college in Enfield Highway.

Kingfisher Hall Primary Academy, which was given initial approval by Education Secretary Michael Gove in October, will be housed in a purpose-built school in The Ride, opposite Waverley School.

The new building will open on the land leased from the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) in September 2013, subject to planning permission.

The school’s first 60 pupils starting this September will be temporarily taught in the Cuckoo Hall Academy, which is also run by the Cuckoo Academy Trust.

Executive principal Patricia Sowter said: “I am delighted the governors of CONEL have given their approval for the lease of the land and I look forward to working with the college in the future.”

The school, which will eventually cater for 480 pupils, must still agree a funding agreement with the Department for Education before opening in September and is currently running a consultation with parents.

Free schools are run by groups of parents, teachers, charities, trusts, religious and voluntary groups. They are set up as academies and funded directly by the Government.

The idea was a key part of the Conservatives’ manifesto during the build-up to the General Election, but academies have been criticised for being expensive and diverting funding from existing schools.
