Critics of the Government's plans to change the NHS have organised a candlelight demonstration on Sunday.

The group, which includes members of the British Medical Association, the Royal College of Nursing and the Royal College of Midwives, will light candles and hold a debate in Enfield Town to debate the proposed Health Bill, which is backed by Health Secretary Andrew Lansley.

The aim of the event, which is open to all, is to drum up support against the bill, which is being debated in the House of Lords on February 8.

The changes, which would be brought in next year, include GPs being put in charge of much of the NHS budget, and the health service being opened up to greater competition from the private and voluntary sector.

Critics fear this will lead to a postcode lottery of care across the country.

Under the new bill, NHS London could also action its proposal to close A&E and maternity services at Chase Farm Hospital.

Evelina Dimopoulou, who has helped organise the event, said: “I think it will be really fruitful to have a debate about the changes.

“There will be a question and answer session and we really welcome people who are either for or against the new health bill.

“What we are trying to do is raise awareness. People are free to make their own choice but it is really important for people to know why we are opposing it.”

Dr Aseem Malhotra, a renowned cardiologist, will be the guest speaker at the event. The group is encouraging people who are unable to take part in the event to light candles in their own homes.

Around 100 people are expected to attend the meeting, which takes place at 5pm at The George pub, in Market Place, Enfield Town.
