An Edmonton doctor has been arrested in the United States over his alleged involvement in purchasing weapons for a terrorist organisation.

Dr Murugesu Vinayagamoorthy, known as Dr Moorthy, is accused of being a senior intermediary for the Tamil Tigers, a Sri Lankan terrorist organisation accused of carrying out more than 200 suicide bombings.

After his arrest in an undercover FBI operation, Dr Moorthy is now in a cell in New York. He is charged with facilitating the purchase of American rockets and British submarine technology for the Tigers.

It is also alleged that Dr Moorthy, 57, attempted to bribe a US official with $1,000,000 to take the Tigers off the government's terrorist blacklist.

Dr Moorthy works as an independent contractor GP at Forest Primary Care Centre, in Hertford Road. His wife Pushpam, who denies the allegations, made against her husband, also works as a GP.

A spokesman for Enfield Primary Care Trust, which employs Dr Moorthy said: "We are shocked to hear of the arrest of Dr Murugesu Vinayagamoorthy (Dr Moorthy).

"We are urgently putting arrangements in place to provide care for his patients. PCTs sometimes have to make emergency arrangements to cover a GP's absence and our priority is to make sure that patients continue to get the best possible care."
