A LABOUR councillor has called for an "open discussion" on the future of the Selby Centre and the neighbouring Bull Lane playing fields.

Councillor Alan Stanton, who represents Tottenham Hale, said both of the council-owned sites which combined nearly 12 acres of land, should be treated as a whole in order to create a scheme that could benefit the entire borough.

Bull Lane and neighbouring Pasteur Gardens sit on the Enfield and Haringey border is currently on the market after a deal with a community sports group, who wanted to preserve the green space, fell through.

The fields sit at the back of the dilapidated community centre, formerly Tottenham County School, whose future is now in jeopardy.

Cllr Stanton said: "There is an opportunity here to do something positive if all the land was looked at together and that means total transparency and open discussion.

"The council is having to make a fifth of its employees redundant because of Government spending cuts so there is a real pressure to raise money to protect services for residents. I would support a scheme that offered housing, a parts of Bull Lane being preserved and there could even be room for a community centre."
