A STREAM running through Edmonton that caused damage to hundreds of homes and businesses when it overflowed ten years ago has been included in a Government flood risk project.

Salmons Brook, which runs from Enfield Chase to Lower Edmonton, will be safeguarded under plans from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs which start this year. The Salmon and Ching Brook Package would help protect 3,976 homes households prompting Edmonton MP Andy Love to urge the minister for natural environment Richard Benyon to make it a priority.

Salmons Brook has a long history of flooding and caused chaos in October 2000 when it wrecked 192 homes, in Montagu Road, and the Montagu Road industrial estate. Mr Love said: "We certainly do not want to see a repeat of this and that's why I'm pushing for swift action from the Government.

"It is very positive indeed that the Salmons Brook scheme has been put on the list of flood risk management projects for the coming year. I am now urging the minister involved to consider the number of households affected by the work and push ahead with the project at the earliest opportunity."
