I am finding many people bemused by the fact that having elected two Conservative MPs out of three, we have a Labour council, as one would hardly vote for a Labour council if one had voted for a Conservative MP. Did Labour benefit from European Union citizens being allowed to vote in local elections (but not national)?

Will we in Enfield now have to live with the results of New Labour’s policy of swamping our country with new EU residents which it could have controlled if it wanted to?

For those who do not remember or did not experience the last time Labour ran our council, unless this particular leopard has changed its spots, expect a bumpy ride.

They lost the last time around because of the number of asylum seekers who had ended up in our borough and the filthy streets — unswept roads, abandoned cars, uncut public verges and alleys full of flytipped rubbish.

While the Conservatives have been far from perfect in many areas, they have at least tried and in many ways succeeded, to raise our borough from the pit of despond inherited from Labour.

The question is, how long will it take for us to go back down that same path or should one dare to hope against hope that this time care and concern for Enfield and its residents will prevail?
