In response to Douglas Coker’s letter (‘Be as green as possible’, May 12), the modern Enfield Labour Party is sincerely and deeply focused on attacking the giant ecological challenges we all face.
It has been gratifying to see this commitment recognised by some of your recent correspondents — not all of whom define themselves as Labour.
Indeed, support from like-minded progressives is crucial to our success in improving Enfield’s environment and we will be organising substantive community consultations on a regular basis to ensure that everybody’s good ideas are taken on board.
Our election manifesto’s eco-component was designed in this way, attending both to traditional responsibilities such as flytipping, recycling or tree planting but also incorporating broader sustainability approaches. A prime example is our plan to organise an energy audit of all public buildings in Enfield with a view towards saving resources.
In Bowes ward, we have begun a process of trying to include community green spaces along the rebuilt North Circular — a holistic and ecological vision that was very popular among the electorate.
It is important to remember that everyone is a custodian of the environment. We are all in this together.
Councillor Alan Sitkin, Labour, Bowes Ward
