FOUR Enfield eateries have been criticised for having excessive amounts of salt and fat in their food.

Mighty Chicken, Favourite Chicken and Spice Grill in Hertford Road, and Yum Yum in the market place in Enfield Town, were randomly selected by Enfield Council as part of a survey on food dangers for teenagers.

The eateries were measured on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) traffic light labelling method. Mighty Chicken and Favourite Chicken fared the worst, achieving a "red" for salt, fat and saturated fat.

Spice Grill was given two red scores and an amber for salt, and Yum Yum gained two reds and a green for saturated fat.

According to FSA guidelines, a red light indicates you should only have the food as an occasional treat, whereas green means it is low in that nutrient and a healthy choice.

Creole Cuisine, in the market place, Enfield Town, was also surveyed and given two amber ratings for salt and fat, and a green rating for its saturated fat.

Carol Colins, from the council's Food Safety Team, said: “The results speak for themselves. "We have given advice to these five eateries and provided information to the public.

"It is now for takeaways and parents to make their own minds up on how best they can provide a healthy balanced meal for their customers and children.”

The premises were randomly chosen by officers as favourite pupil haunts after school.

There are no legal requirements on nutrition for caterers and no enforcement is possible.

Ms Collins added: “We will follow up on our visits to see if our advice was taken alongside our regular work in protecting resident’s health in our food hygiene inspections.”
