A customer suffered life-changing injuries after he was crushed by his own car at a garage.

Tottenham local Mahmut Emanet, 62, spent six days in critical care after an incident at Silver Street Service Garage in Edmonton.

The garage has now been fined £12,000 after an investigation found it failed to protect members of the public from health and safety risks.

On August 15 Mr Emanet took his company car to be serviced at the garage on College Close.

Company director Seyit Dilek left him standing under the vehicle while it was raised on a vehicle lift, a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found.

As Mr Dilek walked away from the car it fell from the lift and on to Mr Emanet.

Mr Emanet was lucky to survive but sustained permanent and life-changing injuries.

The company also failed to ensure that the equipment had been thoroughly examined for any defects.

On December 7 the company was fined £12,000 and ordered to pay £2,406 in costs at a hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

Mr Dilek was in control of the garage and was directly responsible for the way work was conducted and access was managed, the HSE investigation stated.

He was fined £500 and ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.

HSE Inspector Michelle Morphy said: “Mr Emanet is lucky to be alive.

“This incident could have been avoided if he had simply been asked to stay in the waiting area provided for members of the public.

“Instead, not only was he left to move freely around the two-post vehicle lift on which his vehicle was raised, he was asked by a director of the business to assist with the work being carried out, in the minutes before it fell.”
