Southgate Hockey Club men's head coach Kwan Browne is hoping their bid to break the domestic league attendance record at Snakes Lake will prove inspirational on Saturday.

The event is centred around their women's East Conference clash with Bishop's Stortford (3.30pm) and the table-topping men's meeting with third-placed Old Loughts (5.30pm).

And Browne says the idea has generated plenty of excitement and ideas among members.

"Everyone has been trying to think of ways to add a bit of value to make it more exciting for the spectators and to inspire any youngsters who come along to want them to play," he said.

"There are lots of teachers involved in hockey who are trying to encourage the kids from their schools to turn up, it should be exciting.

"There's a nice buzz about it and everyone is chipping in, it's bringing the men and women's sections closer together.

"It will be one thing breaking the record, that would be great, but if some come and enjoy the experience and decide to play, that will be great too.

"The lovely thing about the hockey community is it's competitive, but it is one big family that really looks out for each other.

"We want to push other clubs to think about getting bigger crowds too. Lets see if Loughts can get a bigger crowd next time!"

Southgate edged past hosts Oxford Hawks 4-3 last weekend, while Loughts were 5-2 winners over Canterbury.

And Browne expects a good contest between two of the top sides, adding: "It should be a really good game. We're top at the moment but anyone who has been in a league where only one team gets promoted knows it can be really tight with close moments and this will be one of them.

"There's an incredible amount of international players in the Premier League but even with us in the division below, there is still GB and England U21 players, some from Italy, myself from Trinidad.

"The women have got England U21s. People just don't know about it and it will be great for the players to play in front of a big crowd and for the spectators to see the high level of play."

*Profits from the day will be donated to three charities including Worldwide Cancer Research and The North London Hospice where women’s third XI captain Caroline O’Brien sadly passed away earlier this season from cancer.

Members Ella Duthie and Lewis Hollett will be running the London Marathon in aid of both charities, while the day will also be raising money for The Southgate Sports and Leisure Trust which helps care for and look after the Hockey Centre for the community and future generations to enjoy.

Gates open at midday, with spectators advised to use public transport with limited parking available. Opera singers Oliver Gibbs and Sarah Minns are singing before each game.
