HUNDREDS of people showed up for the official opening of a sports facilty and garden built in honour of a Palmers Green family who perished in a fire five years ago.

The opening of the £60,000 Dipali memorial sports facility and garden in Broomfield Park, Aldermans Hill, was attended by many civic dignitiaries, including Enfield Southgate MP Stephen Twigg and the Mayor of Enfield Cllr Graham Eustance.

The site has been built in memory of Shahjahan and Rukshana Miah and their children Holly, Shamir and Mary who were killed at the Dipali restaurant in Aldermans Hill, Palmers Green, on February 23, 1997.

A memorial fund was set up soon after the tragedy and donations amounted to £30,000. Enfield Council matched that sum to enable the sports facilty to be built.

A major contribution was also made by brewers Carlsberg.

The multi-purpose sports pitch gives scope for many activities including basketball, hockey, cricket and football.

Appeal co-ordinator Muzahid Choudhry said: "The turnout for the opening of the sports facilty was fantastic. I am very grateful to everybody who came along and to all those who made donations to the fund.

"Hopefully the sports facilty will be of great benefit to the community."s=10f+bHUNDREDS of people showed up for the official opening of a sports facility and garden built in honour of a Palmers Green family who perished in a fire five years ago.o
