A train driver who crashed into the buffers at a station is currently on bail after being arrested for allegedly being unfit to work through drink or drugs.

At 8.21am on October 12, an Overground train collided with a buffer stop on platform 2 of Enfield Town station.

The train involved was the 7.45am service from London Liverpool Street to Enfield Town, operated by Arriva Rail London.

There were 75 passengers reported as being on the train at the time of the collision. Two passengers received treatment at the scene for minor injuries with the incident prompting a huge emergency response.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has confirmed an investigation has been launched to determine the sequence of events that led to the train crashing.

But it has emerged the driver of the train has been suspended.

A spokesperson for Arriva Rail London said: "We cannot comment on this criminal case, but we can confirm that the driver involved in the low-speed collision at Enfield Town station has been suspended following a positive test for drugs or alcohol.

"We also continue to provide every assistance to the investigation by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB).

"We have a zero-tolerance policy to drugs and alcohol and will always put the safety of our customers and colleagues first."

A statement from the British Transport Police said: "A 39-year-old man from Essex was arrested on October 26 in connection to an incident at Enfield Town station on October 12, where a train crashed into the buffer stops.

"The driver of the train was arrested on suspicion of endangering the safety of the railway and being unfit to work on a transport system through drink or drugs.

"He has been released on bail until November 19, and detectives continue to make enquiries into the incident."
