The top 50 gastropubs in the UK for 2021 have been compiled by the global travel site Big 7 Travel, with an impressive seven from London featuring.

The Hero of Maida was highest placed out of that group, just about making the top 10.

In 16th and 17th place you had the Marksman in Hackney and the Guinea Grill in Mayfair respectively.

Following that up the Orange in Belgravia was 21st, with the Canton Arms in Stockwell not fair behind in 24th place.

The Anchor & Hope in Southwark was 32nd, before the London venues were rounded up with the Princess of Shoreditch coming in 36th spot.

Overall, this was an impressive placing by area, with London having more representatives that any other county on the list.

Kent did have two establishments in the top 10, and Oxfordshire was the next best overall with four on the list.

What food can you eat at these London gastropubs?

Fine dishes are to be found in all of these establishments, including Welsh rarebit, sausage rolls, salads, charcuterie, cheeses and other good things on the blackboard at the Hero of Maida.

If you're looking for good veggie options then the Orange can provide a quality veggie Scotch egg, whilst at the Canton Arms their Dexter beef short ribs and a delicious banana caramel bread and butter pudding are highly recommended.

The Anchor & Hope is famous for its seven hour lamb shoulder, while the Princess of Shoreditch can offer British corn with a hazelnut and charcoal praline as one of its many options.

How was the list compiled?

In its second year of existence now, the list was determined from a combined score of reader's suggestions throughout the year, online user reviews and Big 7 Travel's editorial team.

A gastropub is defined as a hybrid pub, bar and restaurant serving alcoholic food and drinks.

The list was looking out for those establishments that went above and beyond just ordinary pub grub.

It would be the sort of place patrons would come to for a Sunday roast, house-cured meats an artisan ingredients.
