The mayor of Enfield will serve a second term in a row after being re-elected by members of the Labour group.

Cllr Sabri Ozaydin, who represents Turkey Street ward, was elected mayor at the annual council meeting on Wednesday.

When he was sworn in during a ceremony held remotely in July last year, the UK had emerged from the first national coronavirus lockdown – but more lockdowns were to come.

In her nomination speech, council leader Cllr Nesil Caliskan said she was sure Cllr Ozaydin had been “unable to fulfil the role in the way that he had envisaged” due to the Covid restrictions.

After being elected, Cllr Ozaydin said: “I express my sincere appreciation for placing your trust in me. I take this responsibility and trust you have shown in me very seriously.

“I commit to serving the people of the borough of Enfield to the best of my abilities, enthusiasm, compassion and devotion to our community.”

He added: “I am hoping to gain as much support as possible during my mayoral year throughout my charity, by working closely with as many voluntary sector groups and as many hard-to-reach groups as possible.

“I am so proud to be a resident of Enfield borough, where our community as a whole is one of plentiful culture and diversity, and this should be celebrated to encourage each and every family to feel welcome and part of something very special.”

The Conservative group abstained on the mayoral election, but members of the Labour group voted in favour.

The mayor subsequently led tributes to Monty Meth MBE, president of the Enfield Over 50s Forum, who died in March at the age of 95.

Cllr Christine Hamilton (Labour, Enfield Highway) will remain as deputy mayor for another year.

The official ‘mayor-making’ ceremony is expected to take place on July 14 at 7pm.
