Tottenham legend Ossie Ardiles joined local volunteers and members of our Armed Forces Spurs Supporters’ Club to distribute foodbank flyers.
Foodbanks provide emergency food and support to people living in poverty – currently more than 14 million people in the UK – including 4.5 million children.
To help avoid holiday hunger during the May half term, Tottenham Foodbank has created food support flyers featuring 20 organisations offering free food to local residents in need.
Legendary former midfielder Ossie, who is also a Spurs ambassador, joined fans and volunteers as they pounded the pavements to deliver the flyers to residents across N15, N17 and N22.
Ossie spent the morning talking to volunteers and thanking them for their support as well as having socially distanced photos.
Back in January 2021, the club launched a fundraising initiative to support North Enfield and Tottenham Foodbanks throughout the year.
The club and its fans are long-term supporters of the foodbanks assisting local people living in crisis.
During the pandemic, demand for them has risen by approximately 300 per cent.
Ossie said: “After what has been an incredibly challenging year, it was a privilege to join volunteers today and help distribute flyers within the community."
He added: “Tottenham Foodbank does an absolutely incredible job in supporting people and it’s vital we continue to raise as much awareness and funds as possible to ensure their great work continues.”
Squadron leader Will Brooke, chairman of Armed Forces Spurs Official Supporters Club, said: “As members of the Armed Forces, we are extremely keen to engage in wider community activities, specifically lending help and support to members of society who need a helping hand.
“When we were made aware of the great work of Tottenham Foodbank through Spurs social media channels, our available members jumped at the chance to help out, providing enduring support to the Foodbank team.
"Helping out in the Tottenham community is our way of giving something back and saying thank you to the local residents and Spurs fans.”
Pastor Tonye Philemon, Tottenham Foodbank Manager, said: “Our goal is getting information into the hands of neighbours who urgently need help with food, housing, debt management, mental health and secure jobs.
“By teaming up with Spurs fans and food support organisations across our community, there’s no limit to what we can achieve together.”
