Three schemes designed to cut pollution and rat-running could be rolled out in Haringey – with one bordering a similar scheme in Enfield.

Town hall chiefs have launched a consultation on the initial plans for low-traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs), designed to reduce reliance on the car and boost walking and cycling.

It is hoped they will tackle air pollution, improve the quality of life and wellbeing of residents and help Haringey become a zero-carbon borough.

LTNs involve closing road entrances using bollards and similar measures to prevent through-traffic on residential streets.

Their introduction in Enfield has been criticised by some residents, who have warned of more traffic and pollution on surrounding roads coupled with long delays to journeys.

Haringey Council is planning to roll out an LTN in Bounds Green, which will share a border with the Bowes LTN scheme in Enfield.

Plans have also been drawn up for LTNs in St Ann’s and Bruce Grove, Tottenham.

Residents can share their views on the planned schemes by commenting on interactive maps designed by the council. Details are available here.

Cllr Matt White, cabinet member for planning and strategic transport, said: “The launch of this engagement exercise around the introduction of LTNs is a step in the right direction for reducing carbon emissions in our borough, promoting the health and safety of our community and making our neighbourhoods more pleasant places to live.

“We’re keen to hear residents’ views because we want to shape any proposed works to suit the needs of local people – ultimately the people who will be most affected.”

The interactive maps of the LTNs will be live until Sunday, March 7.
