The NHS trust which runs Harlow's main hospital has reported 16 coronavirus deaths in the last week.

The week before The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust posted just four deaths.

The trust has now confirmed a total of 239 Covid deaths.

As the rate of infection in Harlow shot above 200, the town's MP held an emergency meeting to address the situation.

In the seven days to November 28 – the latest available accurate data – there were 194 newly recorded infections in the town – an infection rate of 219.4 per 100,000 people.

The week before the rate of infection was 193, which equates to 168 new cases.

Robert Halfon MP met with Essex's public health director and Cllr John Spence, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Health to discuss enhanced test and trace and a new mobile testing site.

Mr Halfon said: "I’ve been working very hard with Essex County Council and public health officials to do what I can to help Harlow reduce our spike in coronavirus rates. This morning, in my latest meeting, we were told that in order to help tackle this rise, we will have an enhanced testing and trace programme and a mobile test site as soon as possible.

"As residents will know, we have now moved out of lockdown and into Tier Two but, in order to stay that way, we must now do what we can - by following the rules and remembering Hands, Face, Space. By doing so, we can help to curb the spike and ensure that further restrictions are not imposed.

"I wish every resident good health and every good wish at this time. We must do all we can to support our thriving shops, small business and charities across our town."
