Another low-traffic scheme is being planned for Enfield to slow down cars and reduce rat-running on residential streets.

The Connaught Gardens Quieter Neighbourhood project will see street entrances closed and one-way systems introduced to reduce through-traffic between Green Lanes and the North Circular in Palmers Green.

It comes after the introduction of similar low-traffic schemes in Bowes and the Fox Lane neighbourhood between Palmers Green and Southgate.

The council plans to roll out the measures in two phases. The first, due to be completed by the end of this year, will see a one-way system introduced on Windsor Road, Osborne Road, and short sections of Lightcliffe Road and New River Crescent.

The second phase includes point closures and a possible school street near Hazelwood School. Hazelwood Lane will be closed to traffic at one end, while Callard Avenue will be closed at the entrance to the North Circular to all traffic except the emergency services and cyclists.

According to the council, the scheme is being developed “to address the concerns raised by residents for many years”.

It is aimed at cutting air pollution and creating a safer environment that will enable people to walk and cycle more from their front doors.

The council says none of the roads will be completely closed to motor traffic, and they will remain accessible to the emergency services.

Concerns have been raised over the effects of low-traffic schemes elsewhere in the borough, with some residents warning they would lead to longer journey times and more pollution.

A resident living in the Fox Lane low-traffic neighbourhood recently reported incidents in which ambulances had been forced to turn around after encountering bollards designed to block through traffic.

Enfield Council has invited residents to respond to a survey on the initial proposals for Connaught Gardens. The survey, which will close at midnight on December 13 is available here.
