A new museum showcasing the history and heritage of a village has opened its doors for the first time.

Radlett and District Museum is home to permanent displays of local photographs, documents, maps, artefacts, as well as changing themed exhibitions.

A central feature of the display is recordings and transcripts of interviews with local people about their experiences of living and working in Radlett.

The museum, located at the rear of the Radlett Village Institute, on the corner of Theobald Street and Watling Street, opened on October 18.

The museum, which is run by volunteers, is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 10am and midday.

Chris Wilkins, trustee of Radlett and District Museum, said: "We are delighted to be opening after many years of planning and preparation. The space in Radlett is a fantastic opportunity to do something right in the heart of the village. We are excited to open and welcome our first visitors.

"The museum is fully compliant with the latest government regulations around social distancing and ensuring visitor safety. We can welcome a maximum of four visitors, plus two stewards, at any one time.

"All visitors must wear face coverings, hand sanitisers will be available and social distancing requirements must be observed, but we can also promise you a warm welcome. We hope local people come along to support us."

Hertsmere borough councillor, Caroline Clapper, said: "The opening of a new museum dedicated to Radlett and the surrounding areas is exciting news, especially during the coronavirus pandemic when culture and leisure activities have been so badly affected.

"The museum is a fantastic new focal point for Radlett's art, heritage and culture. The cabin is a welcoming space where visitors can explore the village’s rich history alongside changing temporary exhibitions."

Parking is available on site or in Newberries car park and the building is wheelchair accessible.
