Colonialism is built on racism and a notion that ‘coloured’ people had to be tamed by the white man.

The colonial view has no principles that prevent people holding ugly, racist views. What tends to change over time is society’s acceptance of the parameters of the discussion, allowing people to express these views sometimes subtly and other times more boldly. What rarely change are the deep-rooted racist views.

Brexit was framed on the notion of the ‘other’ (immigration debate) and the vote brought the ugly, deep-rooted sentiments when the now Prime Ministers and his merry band used the immigration is the key argument for their position.

The road names reflect the history and deep-rooted views.
