Two safer neighbourhood officers will be walking 30 miles in memory of a police sergeant who died of cancer.

Potters Bar Sergeant Noel ‘Bucko’ Buckley and PC Ashleigh Begg will be pounding the streets on Sunday, September 27, as they walk across five police stations around Hertfordshire.

The two officers will be walking in memory of Sergeant Leah McDermott, who died following a short battle with cancer on June 26.

As part of the walk, the two officers are raising money for Macmillan Cancer and are hoping residents will contribute to the £2,500 they have already raised.

Sergeant Buckley said: “The plan is to walk to all the police stations that I have worked with Leah in over the last 18 years. We will start at Borehamwood police station, the last place she worked, and then go to South Mimms police station.

“We will then walk from there to Headquarters and then onto Hatfield police station. From there we will walk to St Albans police station which is where I first met Leah in August 2002. From there we will walk back to Borehamwood police station.”

He added: “Leah was an inspiration to us all and I am truly honoured to have known her and worked with her for the last 18 years. I never got the chance to tell her that I was going to complete this walk and raise money for cancer, however she raised so much money for cancer charities over the years and so I know she would be happy.”

Two other Hertsmere colleagues who lost their lives to cancer will also be in their thoughts during this challenge – PC Ailsa Turnbull and PCSO Rosario Torrisi - as well as Sergeant Buckley’s dad.
