A Walthamstow girls’ school has ranked top 15 in the country for academic progress made by pupils from their arrival to their GCSEs.

Eden Girls’ School achieved an outstanding ‘progress 8’ score of +1.19 – thirteenth best in the country, the Department for Education’s final GCSE league tables revealed.

Progress 8 reflects the value that schools add to the progress of students, by measuring progress across eight key subjects from the age of 11 to the age when they complete their GCSEs.

This means that on average, pupils at Eden – rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted in 2017 – can expect to achieve more than one GCSE grade higher per subject than pupils of similar prior ability nationally.

At the Blackhorse Lane school, 87 per cent of pupils achieved a ‘standard pass’ in English and Maths and 66 per cent of students achieved a ‘strong pass’ in English and Maths – one of the highest among non-selective schools.

Shahina Ahmad, principal of Eden Girls’ School, Waltham Forest, said: “We are delighted to have secured such an exceptional set of GCSE results.

“We hope these results will help our young women to go on to achieve even greater success in the future.

“The progress our pupils make at our school is testimony to the hard work and dedication of staff, parents and the pupils themselves.

“The whole school community has worked with real determination to achieve these life-changing outcomes.”

Star Academies, the Multi Academy Trust (MAT) which operates Eden Girls’ School, has been named the top performing MAT in England for the second consecutive year.

Five of the trust’s schools have been placed in the top 14 nationally for progress, with Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School in Blackburn securing first place nationally for the fourth consecutive year.

Hamid Patel CBE, chief Eeecutive of Star Academies, said: “I am delighted to see the progress made by pupils at Eden Girls’ School.

“The results clearly reflect the hard work and commitment that has gone into developing our pupils.

“At Star Academies, we work to provide young people, who live in some of the country’s most deprived communities, a real chance to become the leaders of tomorrow.

“We now hope to build on Eden Girls’ School’s success to achieve even better results next year.”
