A driver has been sentenced after a motorcyclist died in a collision.

David Harknett, 79, of Patmore Way, Romford, was sentenced to a 12-month community order and a two-year driving ban at Chelmsford Crown Court on Wednesday, October 9.

Motorcyclist Donald Ukwunnah, 38, died on the A113 at Stapleford Tawney, on Saturday, September 1, 2018.

Harknett, who was driving in a Peugeot 2008, failed to negotiate a bend and drifted onto the wrong side of London Road.

This incident resulted into the collision with Mr Ukwunnah’s motorbike being ridden in the opposite direction.

Mr Ukwunnah died at the scene while Harknett suffered bruised ribs and minor injuries.

He admitted causing death by careless driving at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, August 7.

Investigating officer DC Jac Dean said: "This was a tragic incident that has affected and changed the lives of all those involved.

"It is a timely reminder of how a moment's distraction or inattention when behind the wheel can have devastating consequences.

"Our thoughts are with Mr Ukwunnah’s family, who must face the future and rebuild their lives without a much-loved family member."
