The funeral of one of the two people who died after a car crashed into a tree last month will take place later today.

Max Halcrow, 21, a footballer for Debden Park FC was pronounced dead at the scene on Goldings Hill, Loughton, on Saturday, August 24.

The service is due to take place at the City of London Crematorium, Aldersbrook Road, Manor Park, at 1.15pm.

Sophia Khan, 16, who had received her GCSE results from Roding Valley High School less than just two days before the crash, also sadly died.

Both victims had attended the secondary school on Alderton Hill, Loughton.

A 16-year-old girl from Woodford and a 17-year-old girl from Chingford were also seriously injured.

A full inquest has since been launched but a date has not been confirmed as the incident still may become a criminal investigation.

The 21-year-old driver from Loughton was arrested at the scene of the crash on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He was also arrested for causing serious injury by dangerous driving and for perverting the course of justice and has since been released on bail until Friday, September 20.

Coroner's officer Joe Lagrossi, speaking at Chelmsford Coroner's Court on Friday, August 30, confirmed that Max died after suffering severe head injuries, while Sophia died due to suffering multiple different injuries.

Roding Valley High School Headteacher Sharon Jenner paid tribute to the students, saying: "It is a terrible tragedy to have lost two such lovely young people from the school community.

“Our thoughts remain with their families at this most heart breaking and distressing time.”

Debden Park FC held a memorial football tournament for their former friend and player raising £17,3444 on GoFundMe.

The message on their fundraising page reads: “Max was young footballer who played for Debden park football club who was always a great team player and friend to all.

“Please donate any money you can towards this page and all proceeds received will be donated to Max’s family to give Max the send-off and celebration of his life that he truly deserves.”
