Those travelling by train this weekend are being urged to check the schedule before heading out.

Network Rail will be carrying out major upgrade work on the East Coast Main Line over the August Bank Holiday weekend - from Saturday (August 24) to Monday (August 26).

Details of the reduced services run by Thameslink are as follows:

Saturday and Sunday

  • London Kings Cross station will be closed.
  • Trains will not run between Peterborough/Cambridge and London Kings Cross/St Pancras.
  • A limited replacement bus service will be in operation between Cambridge and Letchworth Garden City, Peterborough and Potters Bar and Stevenage and Enfield Chase.

Monday

  • A reduced service will be in operation on all routes, particularly to and from London Kings Cross.

David Golding, interim route managing director, said: “We appreciate there is never a good time to carry out large-scale improvements to the railway. I know that bank holiday engineering work can affect passengers who want to make the most of the long weekend but we plan the work to affect the fewest number of people.

“Thankfully, disruption for passengers travelling between London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and the Lake District is minimal. However, we are still urging passengers to check before they travel at www.nationalrail.co.uk as major work on other parts of the network could have a knock-on effect.”

Nationally a total of £97m is being invested as part of Britain’s Railway Upgrade Plan.
