Thousands of people flocked to witness the 32nd Theydon Bois Donkey Derby over the weekend.

Jockeys aged between ten and 15-years-old rode their donkeys in seven races round the course in the popular annual town event on Sunday, July 14.

A variety of entertainment was set up for visitors, including zorbing, a penny arcade; and go karting.

Essex Motorcycle club, who set up in the arena over the green, also saw held a dog show and Springbok Fitness ladies performed a high-octane trampet routine.

Nick O’Flynn, chair of the organising committee, said: "On behalf of the committee I would like to say a huge thank you to all those who came along to support us during the day despite the various sporting finals on the telly.

“We had a fantastic turnout and we hope everyone enjoyed it.

“A huge thank you to the legion of volunteers who helped out over the weekend and a big thank you to our sponsors plus all the people who paid to have stalls there.

“The sponsored races and donkeys, advertisers in our programme and all who gave their services for nothing or donated prizes, cakes and bric-a-brac, it all adds up to make this event as successful as it is.”

Estate agents Butler & Stag, who sponsored the event, hosted a ‘beat the keeper’ penalty shootout stand which contributed to £485 raised for the Theydon Bois Scouts and Guides groups and other village charities.

Butler & Stag managing director, Neil Leahy, said: “The 2019 Donkey Derby will be remembered for bearable temperatures and record crowds.

“As a local resident and business owner, we are privileged to be part of Theydon Bois’ leading social event.

“Our beat the keeper stand was busy all day with adults and children trying to win the prize of a football. As ever, we are proud to be part of such a community driven event and are already looking forward to next year.’’
