Three children are pledging to get muddy and take part in Cancer Research UK’s Enfield Race for Life in honour of their grandmother who survived leukaemia.

Jack, Lilyrose and Ted Waldon, aged 11, 10 and six, have joined forces with their classmates at St Andrew’s School in Enfield Town to take part in Enfield Pretty Muddy Kids at Trent Park on Saturday, June 8.

Around 60 children at the school, calling themselves St Andrew’s Muddy Crew, have so far raised more than £4,000 for Cancer Research UK and are encouraging others to follow their lead.

This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone – women, men and children – to join either the Race for Life 5k or 10k on Saturday, June 8, or the Pretty Muddy 5k or Pretty Muddy Kids on Sunday, June 9.

Jack, Lilyrose and Ted’s grandmother, Mrs Puri Meek, was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2001 aged 55. Mrs Meek was taken to UCH where she was treated successfully with a six-month period of intense chemotherapy.

Her daughters, Amanda and Jozie, have always been grateful for each year she has survived to see her grandchildren grow up.

Jozie said: “I am so overwhelmed by the support of the school and their school friends, coming together for this fantastic cause, all motivated to make a difference and fundraise for this fantastic charity.”

Amanda added: “This is an opportunity for our family to say thanks for the life-saving work researchers do which enable families like ours to spend more time together.”

Brenda Scott, Cancer Research UK’s Enfield Event Manager, said: “We are very grateful to St Andrew’s Muddy Crew for their support. By joining the Race for Life in Enfield, people can make a real difference in the fight against cancer.”

Assistant Headteacher, Mrs Statham said: “We wish them all luck and hope they have lots of fun. The staff and parents at St. Andrew’s are always very supportive of the children, both in and out of school, and we are all very proud of them”.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research.
