A medical student will be running the London Marathon later this month in memory of his mother who died from cancer.
Nathan Hayes, 28, is the son of Eileen Hayes, author and broadcaster, who was awarded an MBE in 2009 for her services to children and families.
Mother-of-four Eileen, who spent most of her life in East Barnet, died on November 28 2017, at the age of 69, after she was diagnosed with probable uterine sarcoma just a month earlier.
The cancer turned out to be epithelioid leiomyosarcoma, a very rare and aggressive form, and she died, surrounded by her family.
To honour his mother’s life, Nathan will be running the marathon on April 28 for cancer charity Sarcoma.
Nathan, who is currently training to be a doctor at Kings College, London, where his mother is an alumni of, recently ran the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park half marathon for the same charity.
He said: “The experience of losing my mum has been the hardest thing emotionally and mentally that I've been through in my life, but really must pale in comparison to what she went through towards the end of her life, and I just want to have a chance to help offer some hope for other families affected by Sarcoma by supporting this charity and the research they fund.”
