A murder investigation has been launched after a man was killed after an assault.

Police were called to Hoe Street in Walthamstow at 6.44am on Tuesday, April 3, to reports of a man having been assaulted.

Met officers and the London Ambulance Service attended the scene.

The victim was a 60-year-old man found suffering from a head injury.

He was taken to an East London hospital where he died at 5.40pm on Wednesday, April 3.

The next of kin have now been informed.

Formal identification and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

A 44-year-old man in Dagenham was arrested on suspicion of murder yesterday, April 4 at around 10.50pm.

Detectives from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command are leading the investigation.

He was taken to an East London police station where he remains in custody.

Police enquiries continue.
