A community choir is calling for more male singers to join their club and perform in their upcoming shows.

Ongar Singers has 30 members who attend weekly practises at Budworth Hall, in High Street, Ongar, but only two men currently complete the line-up.

The choir regularly perform at community events across the district, including their summer concert at The Priory Church of St Laurence in Blackmore on Saturday, July 6.

Fiona Parker, chairman of Ongar Singers said: “We are welcoming anyone over the age of 18 who wants to give it a go for just £6 a week, they can just turn up without needing to do an audition.

“It does not matter if they have no experience, if they can read music that will be a bonus.

“We have a WhatsApp group to support each other by sending musical files of all the scores so they know what to sing.”

For this year’s concert, the group will be singing songs themed around water from all genres including pop, musicals and classical.

The clubs next performance will be next week on behalf of a young carer’s charity supported by Epping Forest District Council chairman Richard Bassett and his wife Sue.

“We really all about being a part of the community,” added Ms Parker. “We have a pianist and our music director John Venables who teaches us who is very experienced and has been with us for about three years.”

Ongar Singers rehearse on Wednesday nights from 7.30pm, Budworth Hall, Ongar.
