The Mayor of London says we must “keep an eye on” street racing in Enfield as it is “extremely antisocial and very dangerous”.

These comments came during Mayor’s Question Time earlier today when Conservative Assembly Member Shaun Bailey wanted to know if Sadiq Khan was “still committed” to tackling street racing.

Mr Khan said; “Street racing is extremely antisocial and very dangerous, and it not only risks the life of the public but those doing the racing.

“The Metropolitan Police are taking action, but it is still a massive problem.

“Residents in Barking and Dagenham, Canary Wharfe and Epping have all experienced violent street racing and there have been incidents in Enfield where there has been an ongoing problem.”

But Mr Bailey wanted to know whether Mr Khan was taking any measures to stop street racing in Enfield- particularly along the A10 which runs through Hackney, Haringey and Enfield – where street racing is a real problem.

Mr Khan said in Enfield there have now been measures put in place to deal with problem and since January 2018 anti-social street racing is a criminal offence.

He also said flexible cameras have been installed on the road and since 2017 traffic signals have been renewed.

But Mr Khan added: “MPs, TfL and the police continue to monitor street racing.

“TfL and the Met are focusing on it and it is right we continue to pay attention to the this. We are lucky there are no fatalities, but we must continue to keep an eye on this.”
