A golfer has completed a year of fundraising for diabetes.

David Dickinson, 68, a former maths teacher, has Type 1 diabetes and also has family members with the condition.

He raised £3,941.52 for Diabetes UK at Bush Hill Park Golf Club, Winchmore Hill.

David said: “I was diagnosed with diabetes in 1986 when I was 36, so when it came to choosing my charity of the year as Club Captain there was no contest. I play golf whenever I get the chance which helps with my overall health.”

People with Type 1 diabetes cannot produce insulin.

About 10 per cent of people with diabetes have Type 1.

No one knows exactly what causes it, but it’s not to do with being overweight and it isn’t currently preventable.

It usually affects children or young adults, starting suddenly and getting worse quickly.

Type 1 diabetes is treated by daily insulin doses - taken either by injections or via an insulin pump.

It is also recommended to follow a healthy diet and take regular physical activity.

Andrea Baganz-Pritchard, fundraiser for Diabetes UK, said: “We were thrilled to be picked as the Bush Hill Park Golf Club’s charity of the year and delighted with the result.

"Every penny will go towards our work to create a future where diabetes can do no harm.”
