An MP has attacked the government after a fatal shooting.

Kate Osamor, MP for Edmonton, reacted to the news of last night’s incidents, saying: “I am dismayed to hear of another shooting and death in Edmonton.

"I am sickened that another young life has been lost. Families are terrified in Edmonton, and across London, for the safety of our young people and loved ones.

“I am utterly appalled that the government cares so little about what is happening.

"If they cared about people’s safety they would fund the police properly.

"If they cared about young lives they would fund youth services properly.

"If they cared about families struggling to get by they would fund local councils properly.

"But we do not see anything that resembles adequate funding for essential services for ordinary people.

"We have to be bolder and smarter in our response. Through a public health approach to violent crime we can address the root causes.

"But this requires central funding for violence reduction units that are fit for purpose. It requires funding for local government, the police, youth services and community groups to be able to work together. Instead the Tories have all these groups on their knees after eight years of punishing and pointless austerity.

“You can’t keep the public safe on the cheap, and it’s very clear that the Tories are failing in their duty to protect the public and keep our citizens safe.”

The Metropolitan Police said officers were called to reports of a man suffering a gunshot wound on St Joseph’s Road in Enfield at about 9.15pm on Tuesday.

The victim, whose age is not yet known, was pronounced dead at the scene at 10.10pm.

Three males were arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.
