Weeks of fresh drinking water running down the drain has “disgusted” councillors and homeowners who are campaigning to get it sorted.

Jackie Herbert from South Oxhey and two Liberal Democrat councillors said they have been trying “for weeks” to stop flooding in Hayling Road they claim is the responsibility of Affinity Water.

Cllrs Andrew Scarth and Keith Martin rallied behind Ms Herbert after she became “exasperated” that “perfectly good drinking water” had been running passed her house for weeks on end, blocking gullies near Embelton Road.

Cllr Scarth said Affinity Water have been contacted on “numerous occasions” about the problem but the only action taken was marking the areas with “blue dots and crosses”.

Cllr Scarth said: “Affinity Water regularly tells us that water is scarce and there was not enough rain in the summer.

“Winter time is ‘catch up time’, so this utility company tells everyone. Well what a terrible example Affinity Water is setting.”

Ms Herbert added: “I was assured by a Ringway officer, a Hertfordshire County Council Highways sub-contractor, that all gullies had been checked during the recent local flooding problem investigation.

“My husband and I have to constantly clear out the leaves and other debris washed down into the new ‘leaf trap’ gullies outside our house and we still have a flooding problem.”

An Affinity Water spokesperson said: “We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by a leak on a water main on Hayling Road, at the junction of Gosforth Lane.

“Our technicians visited the site several times to investigate the area and take water samples to determine where the water was coming from. Due to heavy rainfall, the results were inconclusive.

“However, our technicians re-visited the site earlier this week and identified a leak on a nearby main, which has now been repaired.

“We would like to thank our customers for their patience whilst we carried out this work.”
