An MP has slammed the Government for failing to acknowledge the seriousness of soaring violent crime in Enfield.

Enfield MP Joan Ryan says the Government’s police funding settlement for 2019-20 represents the ninth year in a row of real terms central government cuts to the police.

Ms Ryan said: “This is a slap in the face to our policemen and women who do so much to protect our communities.

“Yet again the Government fails to acknowledge that their cuts to policing are fuelling the surge in violent crime across our borough and the capital.”

“Cuts to the number of police, resulting from the Tory Government’s £600 million cut to London’s policing budget, has led me to start a campaign for more police in Enfield.

“My priority is to keep our community safe. People in Enfield have a right to be safe and feel safe in their homes and neighbourhoods.

“Yet, sadly, I know that many parents are worried whenever their children go out, especially during these dark winter months.”

Over the last 8 years, Enfield has lost 230 uniformed officers from its streets, and the Metropolitan Police have seen their budget slashed by over £600 million.

During this same period, cases of violent crime in Enfield have soared by 85 per cent.
