A by-election will be held next week following the resignation of a Labour councillor.

The poll, which will take place on Thursday (December 13), was triggered when West Green councillor Ishmael Osamor quit after being convicted on drugs charges.

Seema Chandwani will contest the seat for Labour, while Elizabeth Sarah Payne has been announced as the Liberal Democrat candidate.

Hammad Mirza Bing will stand for the Conservatives, and Cecily Spelling will represent the Green Party.

Mr Osamor – son of Edmonton MP Kate Osamor – stood down as councillor for West Green after he was convicted of possessing £2,500-worth of drugs with an intent to supply.

The former deputy cabinet member for Broadwater Farm resident engagement resigned on October 30 and apologised for the “unwelcome attention” his case had brought to the borough.

Labour currently holds 41 seats on Haringey Council, with the Liberal Democrats on 15.

Polling stations will be open in the West Green ward from 7am to 10pm.
