Onlookers chased a suspected thief after they snatched a handbag from a woman.

The victim, aged in her 60s, was stood outside Halifax bank in Watford High Street when her bag was taken.

It happened late at night, between 11.10pm and 11.20pm on Saturday.

Members of the public saw what happened and managed to chase a man and retrieve the bag. Nothing was stolen and no one was injured in the incident.

Police are now appealing for help to trace the Good Samaritans.

PC Daniel Card, from the Watford Local Crime Unit, said: “Although very shaken, thankfully the victim was not injured during the incident and her property was returned, following the swift actions of these Good Samaritans.

“Unfortunately, they did not leave their details and I am keen to trace these people as soon as possible, as they may have vital information which could assist the ongoing investigation.

“I’m also keen to hear from anyone else who was in the area at the time and saw what happened.”

  • A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the investigation and has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
