A man has been jailed for brutally stabbing his wife to death.

Kema Salum, 39, was sentenced to 23 years for the murder of 35-year-old Leyla Mtumwa at their home in Kirkstall Avenue, West Green.

He was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Monday, having pleaded guilty to murder at an earlier hearing.

The court heard how police were called to the couple’s house on March 30 at around 7am.

When officers arrived, Salum answered the door with blood on his hands claiming his wife had attacked him.

Ms Mtumwa was found inside the property suffering from stab wounds - she died at the scene at 8.11am despite the efforts of paramedics.

Salum told officers: "This is my wife and we fight."

Detective Chief Inspector, Dave Whellams, of the Met Police, said: "In what should have been the safest place for her, Leyla was brutally stabbed to death by her husband.

"The true motive of Leyla's death still remains unknown and sadly, we may never know what happened in the lead up to the attack.

"However I hope today's sentence brings Leyla's family some measure of comfort and closure."
