Councillors passed a motion calling on a People's Vote on the final Brexit deal because "in democracy, we have the right to change our minds."

Watford Borough Council's Liberal Democrat and Labour parties unanimously agreed to formally support the campaign at a full council meeting last night.

It means Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor will formally write to MP Richard Harrington to ask him to vote for a second Brexit vote in Parliament.

Cllr Ian Stotesbury, Liberal Democrat councillor for Calllowland ward and the proposer of the motion said in the meeting, said: "We're an incredibly diverse borough with residents from across Europe contributing to our culture and to our local economy.

"Despite being one of the smallest boroughs in the country, Watford has the largest Eastern European community in Hertfordshire."

He claims seven per cent of all NHS staff in the East of England are EU citizens, with West Herts Hospitals Trust having one of the highest percentages of staff from the EU.

He added: "A Peoples Vote on the deal, with a clear option to remain, gives the British public what it deserves; a campaign based in facts not in fantasies and the power to do something about it. With the shambles that is going on nationally, we need a real People’s Vote and if the public are not happy with any option, the right to vote for Remain."

Liberal Democrat Councillor Peter Kloss who seconded the motion said in the meeting, "I am the son of an immigrant and I have always believed that we are a tolerant and open country.

"However, now I’m not so sure. The government’s post-Brexit immigration policy suggests that my late father would not have been welcome as we would not have met the salary quotas suggested by the government.

"In a democracy we have the right to change our minds. I believe we can and should think again now we can see what impact Brexit could have on our country. I believe in a People’s Vote."
