A three-storey-high oak tree came crashing down on an former hospital when it was uprooted in high winds.

The tree damaged the roof, windows and tore away the building’s guttering when it fell on the former Highland Hospital building in Pennington Drive, Winchmore Hill, on Sunday.

Debris and branches were left on the ground and on the building.

The building is now a block of flats after the hospital was closed in 1998 and later bought by developers.

Before the incident the tree was already leaning over the road near the building.

The London Fire Brigade was called to the incident at 11.27am and quickly moved four people who lived inside to safety.

The firefighters were joined by tree surgeons and structural engineers.

The tree was removed at 2.38pm. Nobody was injured.
